Blind in one eye from childhood glaucoma, legally blind in the other with only 20/400 vision, twenty-nine-year-old Vicki Rohrman could barely make out the shapes of objects held close. She could not even see the face of her newborn son, Connor. With her remaining sight quickly failing, Vicki faced a future of total blindness. Then on June 21, at the Indiana University Medical Center, Dr. Robert D. Dietch, Jr. performed a corneal transplant on the Indianapolis woman's right eye with a cornea provided by the Indiana Lions Eye Bank The day after her surgery, Vicki Rohrman's bandages were removed and as TV cameras from all of the Indianapolis' major stations recorded her tears of joy, the grateful transplant recipient saw her month old son clearly for the first time. "I know someone else suffered a loss to give me sight, but I am so glad they decided to donate," Vicki said, after her surgery. |
The Indiana Lions Eye & Tissue Transplant Bank is a not-for-profit statewide organization that provides eye tissue and resources for medical needs, primarily cornea transplantation. Tissue that is determined to be unsuitable for transplant is directed to medical research and the training of medical professionals. Our objective is to improve the quality of life by restoring and preserving sight.
